Science Advisory Committee

The Calar Alto Science Advisory Committee (SAC) guides the observatory in its mid-term strategy for  science and instrumentation. It is composed of five renowned experts (incl. one chair) in the main areas of modern astrophysics. The SAC members are internationally recognized researchers independent from the main agencies funding the observatory, to ensure a fully independent review of any large project requiring evaluation by the SAC.

In particular, the CAHA SAC evaluates large observational programs (legacies) and proposed instrumental concepts to be developed at Calar Alto, with additional support by a technical committee if needed. The SAC usually meets once these projects are presented in a public workshop, and carefully evaluates and recommends which ones are to be performed to the CAHA Executive Committee .
